A Tour
of Palms
in
Corpus Christi, Texas
The next stop on your tour will be the Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi campus. To get there you need to continue on Ocean Drive and follow the signs to the campus. Do not take the first entrance, go on to the second entrance (Sand Dollar Blvd.). You will immediately notice all the Sabal palms that line every street and parking lot on campus. Turn left in front of the first University Apartments and go to the end of the parking lot where the Visitors Building is located. There you will see a beautiful example of Sabals, Washingtonia and Chamaerops humilis. You may want to get out and walk between the apartments to view the palms located there as well as the parking lots. Getting back in your car, drive over to the Faculty Center. After parking you will need to walk between the Faculty Center Building and the Center of Instruction Building to find the "campus oasis"! This court of many palms and tropical plants will surprise you with the abundance of plantings. You will find Texas Sabal, Canary Island Date Palms, Sago Palms, Queen Palms, Washingtonia filifera, Livistona chinensis and Phoenix Date Palm. Plan on taking a few minutes and walk around and examine the thick growth.
