| 释义 | but for ： but that —— 149 1. but for 这个复合介词和 but that 这个复合连词同义，都作“倘若不是”、“要是没有”或“要不是”讲，但两者的用法和词序有些不同：由于 but for 是 if it were not for 或 if it had not been for 的省略，多半要用名词或动名词短语作宾语，而且，多半要放在主句之前； but that 由于是 but for the fact that 的省略，则要用从句作宾语，而且，多半要放在主句之后，有时也可以放在主句之前（参见词条 P.153 ）。 例如： But for the rain we should have had a pleasant journey. — Hornby. 倘若不是下雨，我们这次旅行倒是挺惬意的。 （ =If it had not rained ，…） But for being a little at elbows, I should have put it to right. — C.
